Dallas Bathroom Remodel: 8 Decisions to Make Before Demolition

Elegant Dallas bathroom remodel by Homecorp

A bathroom remodel may be smaller than a kitchen remodel, but the decisions are concentrated into a tight space. Plumbing, electrical work, ventilation, waterproofing, cabinetry, tile and lighting all have to fit together.

The best time to resolve those details is before demolition. As a woman in construction, I like to walk clients through how the room needs to feel and function—not only how it should look in photographs.

Vanity size, lighting, storage, and clearances should be decided before demolition.

1. Keep or change the layout

Moving a toilet, shower or vanity may improve the room, but it can also affect plumbing, framing, slab work and the budget. Test the existing layout first. If it does not solve the problem, make the change deliberately and understand the consequences before construction begins.

2. Choose the shower or tub strategy

Decide whether you need a walk-in shower, tub-shower combination or separate tub. Think about who uses the room now, future needs and how the choice affects space. Shower dimensions, curb details, niches, benches and glass should be coordinated as one system.

3. Plan waterproofing—not just tile

Tile is a finish, not the waterproofing layer. The shower assembly, drain, wall preparation and transitions must be planned and installed correctly. Ask what waterproofing system will be used and how it will be inspected before tile covers it.

4. Select plumbing fixtures early

Many fixtures require specific rough-in locations or in-wall components. Wall-mounted faucets, body sprays, handheld showers and freestanding tubs need early coordination. Changing the selection after plumbing rough-in can create rework.

5. Confirm vanity size and storage

A vanity should fit the room while providing useful storage. Verify door and drawer clearances, sink locations, countertop overhangs, outlets and plumbing. Medicine cabinets can add storage, but recessed models may conflict with pipes, wiring or framing.

6. Design the lighting in layers

Overhead lighting alone can create shadows at the mirror. Combine general light with well-placed vanity lighting, and include shower-rated fixtures where needed. Decide whether you want dimmers, night lighting or illuminated mirrors before electrical work is complete.

Fixture placement and waterproofing decisions affect both function and construction.

7. Address ventilation and comfort

A properly selected and ducted exhaust fan helps control moisture. Heated floors, towel warmers and comfort-height fixtures may also be worth considering, but they affect electrical capacity, floor buildup and layout.

8. Coordinate every finish

Tile sizes affect layout, cuts, niches and drain locations. Countertops, grout, paint, hardware and glass should be viewed together. Order timing matters too: one delayed fixture can hold up installation if there is no approved alternative.

What should be complete before demolition?

Ideally, the layout is approved, major products are selected, lead times are confirmed and the scope is documented. Unknown conditions can still appear once walls are opened, but fewer unresolved design questions mean fewer avoidable delays.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to select all tile before demolition?

It is strongly recommended. Tile dimensions, thickness and availability can affect layout, transitions and schedule.

Can I stay home during a bathroom remodel?

Often, yes, especially if another full bathroom is available. Dust control, access and temporary utility interruptions should be discussed in advance.

How much contingency should I carry?

The appropriate amount depends on the home’s age, existing conditions and scope. Older bathrooms or projects with layout changes generally carry more uncertainty.
